So far simply increasing the # of CPU's from 2 to 4 has alleviated this issue. I'm still thinking of tuning this cluster a bit more.
Also on my previous question about the logstash service running on the second node. Do i need it running if I am only sending messages to the primary? Thank you.

Not necessarily, though every time you "Apply Configuration" it will start back up on the other instance.
